Unit 2 – Understanding the requirements of Pre Production

Pre production is the planning and organisation before going to the studio and actually starting to create your track. This is important because you need this to be organised for a number of reasons. One being that if you prepare everything before so you have a good plan and times when your going to record and meetings then it will all fit into a time slot you have to produce this song, and also then it won’t waste time you have in the studio as this could be wasting time and money.

Types of Production:
Film/Video
Computer games
Interactive media
Music recording
Web production

Finance
In the pre-production we also have a budget and costs that we need to consider. One cost could be hiring out the studio and equipment like mics and any instrument we may need to hire. If we have pre-planned everything then we will be going straight to the studio and using the time well therefore we wont be wasting money and time. Another cost to consider would be any crew/studio engineers, musicians or artists that you are going to hire. All your crew and musicians and equipment may need transport to get them around and to the studio so this will be a cost too.
Time
Within Pre-production you will need to discuss timings and schedules. The main thing will be when all your crew and musicians are available to come and record in the studio and have meetings. We also need to know what time equipment is available, and of course when the studio will be available. This will all have to be done in a certain period too as we have to meet a deadline for when the song has to be finished.
Facilities/Locations
We will need to discuss which studio we will use, and also if we would record some parts in different places to get different acoustics for example recording in an outdoor environment.
Materials
There are a list of materials that we will need for making a song. This can be pieces of equipment, or certain files etc that we need. One thing we need to do is list all available equipment that we need, for example microphones like the SM58 or the Rode NT2A, but also any stands for mics or clips etc. Other materials we need to discuss is formats like WAV or MP3.

Codes of practice
With codes of practice and regulation, any production has top have the rights to any music or copyrighted content. This means they have to ask for the creators permission and possibly pay a license. The company will make a contract that includes health, safety and insurance. According to the law every company has to take safety precautions and keep the staff in the best care possible as well as make sure that they don't overwork as this can break the contract. Most producers are required to be fully qualified in health and safety before working on production. They need to know if their production is suitable for all ages or just certain viewers and this is done by visiting websites and time slots on tv to see when their production can be aired. All paper work that is possibly done by any of the production staff needs to be fully checked before any action takes place.
